Titus 3:2-5: “2 to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men. 3 For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.”

Paul was writing to Titus about how the Christ-followers in his congregation should behave. These defining marks of a Christian should be distinct in each person’s life. These behaviors are not given to only a select few, rather these are displayed in the entire body of Christ.

Paul writes that they speak evil of no one. Gossiping and backbiting is a pandemic that has ravaged the body of Christ for some time. It is not a new concept. Speaking against another has split churches, split homes, and shatter lives. For the Christian it is necessary for us to watch our tongue. It is a dangerous weapon that can tear lives apart. The paradox of the tongue is that on one hand it can build and encourage, and on the other hand it can destroy and maim.

Paul brings the attitude of the Christ-follower to the forefront. He says to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men. In all we do and in all we say we are to represent Jesus in a positive light. If we walk this earth as Jesus walked this earth then we will be fulfilling the work that God started in our lives. Our salvation is personal and inward; however, our salvation is manifested in the outward. When I am a new man in Christ the world around me will see the difference. “Faith without works is dead.” The outward display is a reflection of an inward change. When I fully surrender my life to Jesus, I am essentially saying, “Jesus take over my life, I am no longer in control, you are”. When that happens, we start doing the things that Jesus wants us to do. I can now be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men.

If I do not represent Jesus in a positive light to the world, I dishonor Christ’s work on the cross. We are not only to represent Jesus to a lost and dying world we are also called to represent Christ to other believers. That is how we encourage each other. That is how they can receive a touch from Jesus today, by you touching them “on behalf” of Him.

Be willing to be used by Him today. You be Jesus in the flesh for someone at this moment. Represent Him to your world today, no matter how small or how big.
