Finding People of Peace

Luke 10:1: “After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. 2 Then He said to them, ‘The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. 4 Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and greet no one along the road. 5 But whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house.' 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you.”

Jesus was sending His disciples into the very world that He came to save. Jesus knew that He could not reach the amount of people He wanted to in His short time. In addition, He wanted to train His disciples in the craft of going out into this world. He had instructed them and trained them personally, and now He was putting into practice the lessons He had taught them. Jesus was concerned with the wellbeing of the people. He did not consider just numbers in the kingdom. Every person that surrenders his or her heart to Jesus is given the wonderful opportunity of having a relationship with God for eternity. That is what is at stake, eternity.

Jesus instructs this group of seventy in an unusual way. He sends them out with no provision other then what they have on them at the time. Jesus tells them to enter houses of those who would receive them. Jesus says, “And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you.” He told His disciples to go to the houses that would receive them and forget about the ones who were hostile to them. Go to the houses where there is a son of peace, there you will find a household willing to receive the Gospel of God’s wonderful Love.

Jesus today is calling us to go into this world and share His story of hope and of God’s love for this world. There are going to be people who God has already prepared before hand that will receive His message. Find the “people of peace” in your life, those who are not hostile to God’s wonderful message. Those are the people you want to invest your time and effort in. We find this type of sharing your faith most effective in the relationships that you have already. You have a sphere of influence that you are able to reach with the gospel better then anyone else. Jesus also sent these disciples out without any extra provisions. They were to fully, trust God for their provision. We also must trust God to supply us with everything we need for fulfilling this call on our lives.
