Matt 10:7-10: “And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. 9 Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, 10 Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.”
The men of God bringing God’s message must rely on God’s provision, and His provision alone. For these disciples they were sent into a world that Jesus saw as an incredibly broken and dark world. These disciples were sent into a world and given an opportunity help multiply the Kingdom of God. The message could not yet go to the Gentiles because the Hebrews had not yet rejected it. Jesus wanted to make sure God’s chosen people would here that the Kingdom of God was at hand and then have an opportunity to respond.
Jesus tells His disciples that as they go, preach. While they were journeying through the land He meant that they should preach. This is an awesome lesson for us today. Jesus is speaking to us saying, that as we go throughout our daily walk we should preach God’s message of salvation to this dark world. Jesus said we are to be the salt of the earth and the light to this world. We are to penetrate all aspects of life and be witnesses for Jesus. As we go, we need to preach that very message that this world needs. As Jesus looked out into this world He was moved with compassion because of the spiritual state of this world. The harvest is ready for picking, and the fruit is low hanging. It just needs workers to “go”. Jesus sends His disciples out and tells them to reap and to share the good news to this world.
When Jesus sends His disciples out He tells them to take no extra provision with them. He is wanting them to rely solely on God for everything. Even the power that Jesus gives to them to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, and cast out devils is from another source. The message is not to be theirs, Jesus says, “But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.” Matt 10:19. His point was to let His disciples know that everything that is needed for their mission consists of nothing that they could provide. The only thing that they were called to bring was obedience. Today, we are called to have that same obedience. We are called to preach as we go. Jesus will provide everything we need.
